john i would be grateful for your opinion of these few peices ,,,,
first 2 pictures are a small oil painting , signed but cant make it out,(something like fabor) approx 3.5 inch x 3 inch (without frame)
second item is a bronze horse approx 8 inch in height,,
third item is a liberty & co art deco/nouveau condiment set,,
fourth item is a french candle holder, it says on base 95% etain=95% tin, looks nice but my instinct says its repro rubbish....
thanks john
Hi your 1st.. picture is a nothing item... I would say someone would pay £10
"were and when........... Is what makes something commercial."
2 nd...The bronze horse looks to me like it is made of spelter, part of a Marley horse pair.
In this pose, on bck legs. Something is missing .... Little value.
3rd... does it say Liberty.....(arts and craft movement). If it does and it is silver and hall marked £250
hey john just a few details about the items above...
the first item the small oil painting is actually an oil painting on a thin layer of copper,(not canvas or paper)
the second item the bronze horse is very cold to touch (like bronze) but there is a small scratch on the base of one hoof that uncovers a golden base (looks like a brass horse that has been painted) ,,its too cold and heavy to be spelter...
dont know if this helps or changes anything just letting you know..
oh and the liberty & co set is silver plate i forgot to mention not solid silver, ( still must be worth £40) what do you think..??

Just because it is an oil and on copper does not mean it is valuable.
Strip the horse and then polish it.
May make a handsome piece.
then polish/buff it.
Then hand rub vinegar over it untill a nice petena.
do not use steel wool use a tooth brush not a plastic brush and only a cotton cloth.
after polishing it leaveiti to dry in an airing cupboard for a few days then spray lacquer it.
well john i have come to the conclusion that the horse is actually bronze, the problem is i cant get the green algae of it, have you any tips for this, did you mention vinegar?
its like the same type of algae that you would find on an old roman coin that has been found under the soil...
is cleaning it the best way to go or if its old would the buyer prefer if i left the algae on it (proof of age)

Bronze....UNDER NO circumstances strip it.
Just polish and polish with a cotton cloth with vinegar.
If you find the brown patina does not come back and the item stays green. Most probably the item is a reproduction and tint of green is purposely done to make it look old.
please note it is theantiquesman account on qlocal that is now only used, thank you
john cleaned it with vinegar today,,,the green has come off but before i cleaned it it had a dark brown oily soft touch ,,its a little bit lighter in colour now (thats probably just a few layers of dirt and grease lighter)should i now spray laquer it ? if so where could i get spray laquer? maybe an art shop? or a hardware store?...........thanks//
hi john i have posted a few pics of my newly cleaned bronze horse, just wondering if you could tell me if i have ruined it?
the patina is not smooth its a bit mottled as you can see in the pics...
also on the picture of the head of the horse there is what looks like some kind of restoration.but i cant see any cracks or stress to say that it was ever restored...what do you think..???
John--surprise, a question from me re the bronze horse. Is it missing a base of some sort?
It is missing a lot.
2 nd...The bronze horse looks to me like it is made of spelter, part of a Marley horse pair.

Above was my first post.
The horse is probably bronze. Originally on some sort of base with a man standing and holding the reins next to the rearing horse. One of a pair.
The item has no value but has brought pleasure to the owner in restoring it.
